This test is done to measure carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a protein that can be elevated in colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal or certain non-gastrointestinal cancers. It is mainly used to monitor treatment response, detect recurrence, and help assess disease progression rather than for routine cancer screening.

  • If colorectal or gastrointestinal cancer is diagnosed or suspected.
  • If monitoring response to cancer treatment.
  • If evaluating possible recurrence.
  • If a healthcare provider is tracking tumor progression.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • No special preparation is usually needed.
