This test is done to measure calcitonin, a hormone produced by the C-cells of the thyroid gland that helps regulate calcium metabolism. It is mainly used as a tumor marker for medullary thyroid carcinoma and to evaluate thyroid nodules or suspected thyroid C-cell disorders.
