This test is done to measure the density and strength of bones, usually using a DEXA scan. It helps diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia and evaluates the risk of fractures. It is also used to monitor response to treatment in patients with bone loss or metabolic bone disorders.

  • If osteoporosis or low bone mass is suspected.
  • If there is a history of fractures with minimal trauma.
  • If monitoring osteoporosis treatment.
  • If assessing postmenopausal or age-related bone loss risk.
  • Fasting: Not required.
  • Avoid calcium supplements on the day of the test if instructed.
  • Wear loose clothing and avoid metal objects.
  • Inform the provider if pregnant or recently had contrast imaging studies.
