Bilirubin total

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure the total amount of bilirubin in the blood, including both direct (conjugated) and indirect (unconjugated) forms. Bilirubin is produced when red blood cells are broken down and is processed by the liver. Abnormal levels may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or increased red blood cell destruction.

  • If there are signs of jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes).
  • If liver disease or hepatitis is suspected.
  • If there is suspected hemolysis (increased red blood cell breakdown).
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating liver function.
  • Fasting for 4–6 hours may be recommended (lab-dependent).
  • No special preparation is usually required.
  • Avoid alcohol before testing if advised.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
