This test is done to detect antibodies produced against streptolysin O, a toxin released by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. Elevated levels suggest a recent or past streptococcal infection. It is mainly used to support diagnosis of post-streptococcal complications such as rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
