Apolipoprotein B, Serum

Accredited Facility E-report Qualified Specialists

This test is done to measure apolipoprotein B, the primary structural protein of LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and other atherogenic particles. Each LDL particle contains one ApoB molecule, so it reflects the number of cholesterol-carrying particles in the blood. Elevated levels are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis and heart attack.

  • If cardiovascular disease risk is being assessed.
  • If there are abnormal lipid profile results.
  • If there is a family history of heart disease.
  • If a healthcare provider is evaluating cholesterol particle number and risk.
  • Fasting for 9–12 hours may be recommended (lab-dependent).
  • No special preparation is usually required.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about lipid-lowering medications.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the laboratory or healthcare provider.
