This test detects antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (formerly called microsomal antigen), a key enzyme in thyroid hormone production. It helps diagnose autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

  • If hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism is suspected.
  • During evaluation of thyroid enlargement (goiter).
  • When fatigue, weight changes, or thyroid symptoms occur.
  • In suspected autoimmune thyroid disease.
  • As part of thyroid function and antibody assessment.
  • No fasting is usually required.
  • A blood sample will be collected from a vein.
  • Inform the healthcare provider about thyroid medications.
  • Often interpreted with TSH and thyroid hormone levels.
